Cougars Drop 1-0 Decision to Grand Valley

         WILDER, Ky. - The Southern Illinois University Edwardsville women's soccer team had its season cut short Saturday in a 1-0 loss in the opening round of the NCAA Tournament.
         No. 21 SIUE, which finished with a 17-6 record, was defeated by No. 12-ranked Grand Valley State at the Town and Country Center. Grand Valley moves on to face Northern Kentucky, which topped Wheeling Jesuit 2-0.
         The Cougars outshot the Lakers 7-4 and collected more corner kicks 8-2 but came up on the short end on the score.
         Shannon Carrier scored the game's only goal unassisted just 2:01 into the second half.
         SIUE and GVSU were scoreless in the first half after both teams took two shots each. Grand Valley made the most of its two second-half shots. SIUE pushed in the second half, forcing GVSU goalkeeper Kristina Nasturzio to make six saves in the game.
         Cougar defender Lindsey Kampwerth (Highland) had two shots and was the only player in the game with more than one.
         SIUE and Coach Lynda Bowers completed the season having broken several team records. The Cougars broke school marks for wins (17), shutouts (12) and consecutive victories (10).
