Cougars Win GLVC Championship

         KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- For the first time in their 11-year history the Southern Illinois University Edwardsville volleyball team has claimed the Great Lakes Valley Conference Championship.
         No. 2 seed SIUE defeated fifth-seeded Indianapolis 30-21, 25-30, 30-18, and 30-21 for their 18th consecutive win.
         The win clinches an automatic berth into the NCAA Tournament for just the second time in the Cougars' history. The last time SIUE was in the tournament was 1998.
         The Cougars will await word on Sunday on where and when they will be playing in the NCAA Tournament.
         Senior Tina Talsma led the Cougars with 20 kills and a .459 hitting percentage.
         SIUE and the Greyhounds traded the first two games, then the Cougars came out in the third hitting .452 with 18 kills. SIUE finished off Indianapolis hitting .268 in game four, but holding the Greyhounds to a .021 hitting percentage.
         Krystal Majernik notched 52 assists with four kills. Kim Potthast and Kate Hofeldt had 11 kills each.
         Heather Bonde, the Great Lakes Valley Conference Player of the Year, finished with 10 kills and Allison Buss had 20 digs.
         The Cougars improve to 26-5 overall, and the Greyhounds drop to 24-14 on the year.
         SIUE notched 64 kills to the Greyhounds 51. The Cougars held a .253 hitting percentage, while Indianapolis had a .135 hitting percentage in the contest.
         Whitney Boiling led the Greyhounds with 14 kills and Emeral Holladay had 13.
