EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. - A seven-run sixth inning sparked by a bases loaded triple and a three-run homer lifted Southern Illinois University Edwardsville to a doubleheader split at Roy Lee Field.
The same two teams battle Sunday in what figures to be a crucial doubleheader. The two teams will meet up at T.R. Hughes Park in O'Fallon, Mo., the site of this year's Great Lakes Valley Conference Tournament.
Both SIUE and Bellarmine have .500 records in league play and could be joined in those ranks is UW-Parkside sweeps Kentucky Wesleyan on Sunday. An SIUE-Bellarmine split and two losses by Kentucky Wesleyan would result in a three-way tie.
In Saturday's opener, Bellarmine used a pair of four-run rallies to down the Cougars, Micah McNatt threw 5 1/3 innings for the victory. Chris Kern tossed the final inning for his first save of the year.
Rusty Farris' two-run double to left in the sixth inning proved to be the game-winner.
SIUE rallied from a 4-0 deficit in game two behind Cameron Cheek, who improved his season record to 8-2.
The Cougars cut the lead in half by scoring a pair of runs off a dropped fly ball by Bellarmine right fielder Brian Runyan.
SIUE roared back in the sixth as Robert Rahn tripled with the bases loaded to give the Cougars a 5-4 lead. After an intentional walk and an RBI single by Jake Smith, Jeff Darnall smacked a three-run homer over the right field fence. The seven-run inning was SIUE's biggest inning for scoring for the season.
The Cougars roughed up Bellarmine starter Chris Cahoe for 13 of their 15 hits.
