Cougars All Aces Against Alderson Broaddus, N. Michigan

         EDWARDSVILLE, ILL. -- Southern Illinois University Edwardsville volleyball used a few different methods to improve its record to 5-1 on the season with wins on Friday over Alderson-Broaddus and 11th-ranked Northern Michigan at the Cougar Classic. The Cougars notched 17 service aces in defeating Alderson-Broaddus 30-10, 30-18, 30-10. SIUE collected 19 blocks in a four-game, come-from-behind win over Northern Michigan 23-30, 30-27, 31-29, 30-28.
         The Cougars came out swinging in the Alderson-Broaddus match with a .426 hitting percentage. That gave the Cougars had their seventh best hitting percentage in a match in school history.
         The 17 aces ties for second all-time in a match, with the other performance coming on Aug. 27, 2004.
         Melissa Spann, Heather Bonde, Tina Talsma, and Kate Hofeldt all notched nine kills.
         In the Northern Michigan match, Kim Potthast led all hitters with 18 kills. Kindra Westendorf added 15, and Bonde totalled 10.
         But it was the team's defense that shined, especially in the latter games. The Cougars picked up eight blocks from Bonde and seven from freshman Mallory Clements.
         The Cougars battle Missouri Southern at 9:30 a.m. and second-ranked Truman State at 5 p.m. on Saturday during the Cougar Classic.
