SIUE Ousts Defending Champions

         HILLSDALE, MICH. -- The roller coaster continues.
         Southern Illinois University Edwardsville volleyball dominated game five and went on to a 30-28, 22-30, 30-25, 26-30, 15-10 victory over defending national champion Grand Valley State in the semifinals of the NCAA Great Lakes Regional Championships.
         The Cougars, which tied the school record for victories, improved to 29-5 overall. SIUE plays Ashland at 4 p.m. ET Saturday in the regional championship match.
         SIUE jumped out to an 8-3 lead in game five and didn't look back at the Lakers, which finished another NCAA Tournament run with a 27-4 record. Grand Valley State hit .000 in game five with seven kills and seven errors.
         SIUE hit .267 in game five and .283 overall in the match. Kim Potthast led SIUE with 17 kills.
         Kate Hofeldt and Kelsey Hubert, who both hit negative in the NCAA Tournament opener against Michigan Tech Thursday, rebounded for sparking performances. Hofeldt hit .419 with 14 kills and just one attack error. Hubert hit .370 with 14 kills.
         Grand Valley State used a strong serving game to keep SIUE off balance. The Lakers finished with 15 service aces, the most the Cougars have surrendered all season.
         Meghan Moore powered the Lakers with 23 kills. The Lakers hit .250 but couldn't overcome 30 attack errors and SIUE's nine service aces.
         Jamie Jones posted another solid match at middle hitter with eight kills and five blocks. Beth DeGreeff posted four of SIUE's service aces and returned 11 digs.
         This is the second time SIUE has advanced to the Great Lakes Region Championship match. Former Coach Sandy Montgomery led her 1998 team to the regional final with a 29-7 record.
