Cougars Cruise in Season Opener

        EDWARDSVILLE, ILL. -- Four Southern Illinois University Edwardsville hurlers combined for a four-hit shutout as the Cougars cruised past Missouri Southern State 9-0 in the first-ever night game at Roy Lee Field.
        SIUE installed lights at Simmons Cooper Complex as part of a $1 million upgrade to its premier facility. The Cougars reponded Friday by banging out 13 hits.
        SIUE pitcher Kyle Jones took the victory with six innings of starting duty. He struck out seven and did not walk any Missouri Southern batters. Patrick Keller, Nathan Doty and Clay Zavada each threw an inning to secure the win.
        SIUE's batters spread the wealth as five different hitters picked up RBIs in their first game of the season. Jake Smith, Aaron Sester and Bryan Newby each had two RBIs. Cory Bunner led the team with three hits.
        The win marked only the second time in the last eight seasons that SIUE baseball has started the season with a victory.
        The same two teams play Saturday and Saturday at SimmonsCooper Complex. Game time Saturday is 1 p.m. and Sunday's start time is 11 a.m.
