SIUE Blanks St. Mary's of the Woods

         EDWARDSVILLE, ILL. -- Sabra McCune tossed a no-hitter and Lindsey Laas threw a one-hitter as Southern Illinois University Edwardsville blanked St. Mary's of the Woods 8-0 in six innings and 9-0 in five innings.
         It was the 21st no-hitter in school history and McCune's first at SIUE. The only hit Laas allowed in the nightcap was a bunt single to lead off the game.
         SIUE, 9-3 overall, swept through the Pomeroys with 24 hits on the day.
         In game one, SIUE took a quick 1-0 lead as Shanna Waldo tripled to the gap in right center and was singled home by Holly Neuerburg. Another RBI by Neuerburg and an RBI single by Alicia DeShasier gave SIUE a 3-0 lead after two innings.
         The Cougars took advantage of two errors in the sixth innings. The final error was with bases loaded and two outs when St. Mary's second baseman Stacy Kutcher dropped a pop-up by McCune after being colliding with two outfielder. As the error occurred, SIUE scurried for three runs to halt the game via the eight-run rule.
         McCune struck out 10 and did not walk a batter. SIUE's two fielding errors provided for St. Mary's only runners.
         In the nightcap, SIUE jumped on St. Mary's starter-loser Jocelyn Long for five runs in the first inning. A two-run triple by Mallory Ruggles highlighted the inning.
         SIUE scored four more in the fourth inning led by Alicia DeShasier's third home run of the season, a two-run blast to left-center field.
         Laas fanned four batters in four innings of work. Casey Wantland pitched the final inning to seal the short-game victory.
         The Cougars now head to Florida for the Rebel Spring Games. SIUE plays 10 games beginning March 5 and ending March 11.
