SIUE Serves Up Two More Shutouts

        EDWARDSVILLE, ILL. -- Cameron Cheek notched his first win of the year with a two-hit shutout as Southern Illinois University Edwardsville picked up a pair of victories over Saint Joseph's Sunday afternoon in Great Lakes Valley Conference baseball.
        The Cougars, 13-6-1 overall and 8-5-1 in the GLVC, won the first game 1-0, while gaining a 3-0 victory in the nightcap.
        Cheek gave up two hits and struck out three as the Cougars won for the fifth time in six games.
        The Cougar's pitching staff has not allowed a run in the last 36 innings of play and now has a 1.39 earned run average on the season.
        SIUE scored its only run of game one in the first inning as Jim Grant drew a walk with a the bases loaded that scored Cory Bunner. Bunner collected the Cougars only hit in the game. Jeff Darnall made a diving catch in the seventh inning to hold on to the victory.
        In the nightcap, the SIUE gained a 1-0 lead in the third inning on a triple by Kyle Amerson, who was doubled home by Ryan Czyz. Czyz went 2-2 in the contest.
        The Cougars notched two more runs in the sixth inning on a two-out, two-run double by Jake Smith.
        Adam Tallman made the start for SIUE pitching seven strong inning, giving up three hits, no walks, and striking out six Pumas. Patrick Keller and Adam Schneider came out of the bullpen to shut the door in the final two innings. Schneider gets his third save of the season.
        The Cougars will be back in action on Wednesday to continue a 12-game homestand as the Miners of Missouri-Rolla visit Simmons-Cooper Complex for a doubleheader starting at noon.
