Southern Illinois University Edwardsville baseball coach Gary Collins may have one of the best pitching staffs around, but the Cougars' offense has not been producing enough runs of late to give the pitchers some victories.
SIUE, 14-9-1 overall and 9-8-1 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference, scored just five runs against Rockhurst in a four-game series.
"We're letting a lot of good pitching performances go to waste," said Collins.
The Cougars hold a 1.75 earned run average through 24 games. Meanwhile, the team batting average is .218.
SIUE's Kyle Jones (New Baden) leads the GLVC with a perfect 0.00 ERA. He has not allowed a run in his first 34 innings of play and has won three straight 1-0 contests.
Despite the low run production in those games, Collins said Jones continues to do his job on the mound.
"That's the attitude he brings to the park. He's a very mature pitcher," said Collins.
SIUE continues GLVC play Tuesday with a doubleheader at Roy Lee Field against Quincy. The first pitch is scheduled for 2 p.m. SIUE travels to Kenosha, Wis., this weekend for a four-game series with UW-Parkside.
