Cougars Pass 40-Win Mark

         ST. LOUIS - Southern Illinois University Edwardsville softball eclipsed the 40-win mark for the fifth time in six seasons with a Saturday doubleheader sweep at Missouri-St. Louis.
         SIUE, ranked No. 4 in the NFCA national poll, won a pair of games shortened by the eight-run rule. The Cougars defeated the Riverwomen 8-0 in five innings and 9-1 in six innings. SIUE improved to 41-7 overall and 15-3 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference. Missouri-St. Louis fell to 13-27 and 4-14 in the GLVC.
         Sabra McCune tossed a five-inning one-hitter in game one, striking out 11 and walking one. McCune passed RyAnn Spann for No. 2 in single-season strikeouts. She needs 11 more to pass Sandy Montgomery, who posted 231 strikeouts in the 1985 season.
         McCune didn't allow a hit until in the bottom of the fifth when UMSL's Jessica Keim singled to right field with no one out.
         SIUE's offense was out in full force Saturday, collecting 12 hits in the opener. Holly Neuerburg, Alicia DeShasier, Libby Lenart, and McCune each had two hits.
         SIUE's bats didn't cool off in game two. SIUE rallied for five runs in the top of the sixth to put the game out of reach. DeShasier, Lenart and Mallory Ruggles each had two hits in the nightcap.
         The Cougars next travel to Quincy for a noon doubleheader Sunday.
