Jones Sets NCAA Record

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2
April 8, 2006

JOLIET, IL - Kyle Jones broke the NCAA Division II record for consecutive scoreless innings Saturday with his 48th straight shutout inning.
Jones passed the old mark set by Danny Cox, of Troy, at 43 innings in 1981. (Note: Cox played for the St. Louis Cardinals from 1983 to 1988) The NCAA Division III record was 47 innings. The NCAA Record Book does not have that category for Division I.
The New Baden native now has seven shutouts, including five complete-game shutouts. The NCAA record for shutouts was five, also held by former Cougar standout Ryan Cox who threw five complete-game shutouts in 1999.
Jones, who fanned 13 Lewis batters and gave up only a sixth-inning single, won his fifth consecutive 1-0 decision and improved his season record to 7-0. SIUE, which entered the week as the No. 1 team in the nation in earned run average, swept the doubleheader at Lewis 1-0 and 3-0. SIUE improved to 21-11-1 and 16-10-1 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference. Lewis fell to 3-29 overall and 2-22 in the GLVC.
As a team, SIUE is now one away from tying the NCAA record for shutouts in a season. SIUE broke its own school record today with Nos. 12 and 13. The NCAA Division II record is 14 set by Jacksonville State in 1972 (35 games).
Jake Smith accounted for SIUE's lone RBI with a fourth-inning fielder's choice that scored Cory Bunner.
In the nightcap, Clay Zavada was equally as dazzling by fanning 15 Lewis batters in eight innings while allowing two hits.
Kyle Amerson scored an unearned run in the third inning for the eventual game winner. SIUE added a pair of runs in the ninth on Jeff Darnall's two-run single.
The same two teams face off on Sunday in a noon doubleheader.
