Cheek's Five-Hitter Lifts Cougars Past QU

        Allendale, Mich. - Senior Cameron Cheek tossed a five-hit shutout as the Southern Illinois University Edwardsville baseball team defeated Quincy 1-0 Friday at NCAA Division II North Central Regional.
        Bryan Newby drove home the game-winning run with a fielder's choice that scored Jake Smith in the bottom of the ninth inning.
        SIUE, the No. 5 seed, will play the winner of top-seeded Grand Valley State and No. 3 seed Quincy Saturday at 4 p.m. The Cougars are the only 2-0 team remaining in the tournament. A victory tomorrow would clinch a spot in the North Central Regional Championship Game on Sunday.

        SIUE improves to 40-17-1 on the year, as the Cougars hit the 40-win mark for the first time since 2001. The Hawks drop to 40-19 on the season.
        Cheek went nine innings, striking out three, and allowing just two walks. Cheek goes to 6-3 on the season with his fifth shutout of the year. The Atlanta native, gave up one hit in the last five innings of work, getting 16 ground-ball outs in the game.
        SIUE adds to its NCAA D-II record for shutouts with 21st of the season.
        Brad Stone was just as good for the Hawks, going eight innings giving up one run on four hits with four strikeouts. Stone goes to 10-3 on the season.
        Quincy threatened in the second inning, as Matt Nichols led the off the inning with a double. Nick Dunning followed with a single, and Shawn Altgilbers advanced the runners to second and third on a sacrifice bunt with one out. Cheek answered with a strikeout of Terrence Whittler and a flyout by Cole Koester to end the inning.
        The Cougars loaded the bases with two outs in the fourth inning, but left all three runners stranded.
        SIUE drew leadoff walks in the seventh and eighth innings, but was unable to push a run across.
        Jake Smith reach on a lead off walk to start the ninth inning. Smith went to second on a bunt single by Kyle Amerson. Nathan Doty advanced the runners to second and third with a sacrifice bunt. Michael DalPozzo was intentionally walked to load the bases for Newby.
        Newby chopped a ball to Quincy second baseman Mark Taylor, who flipped the ball to shortstop Chris Scoggins. Scoggins threw to first as Newby was called safe sliding face first into the bag as Smith crossed the plate with the winning run.
        Smith was 1-3 in the contest, and Amerson went 2-for-3.
