Cougars End Season With 9-4 Loss To Ashland

Box Score

May 21, 2006

ALLENDALE, Mich. - The baseball season came to halt Sunday as Southern Illinois University Edwardsville was ousted by Ashland 9-4 at the NCAA Division II North Central Regional Championship.
The Cougars lost successive games in the tournament, falling to third-ranked and top-seeded Grand Valley State 3-1 Saturday before falling to the Eagles Sunday. SIUE closes its season with a 40-19-1 record.
The 40 wins is the best Cougar mark since 2001 when SIUE finished 41-27. It is the fourth time that SIUE Coach Gary Collins has notched 40 wins in a season.
The 2006 Cougars shattered the NCAA Division II record for shutouts in a season with 21. SIUE hurler Kyle Jones broke a pair of NCAA records for shutouts (6) and consecutive innings pitched without allowing a run (54 1/3). SIUE's pitching staff finished with a 2.09 earned run average. The Cougars led the nation in that statistical category before the NCAA Tournament.
On Sunday, SIUE's pitching couldn't hold off the Eagles. Ashland exploded for nine runs on 12 hits. David Waters and Jim Barry each rallied Ashland with three hits.
SIUE scored first with a single run in the first inning as Ryan Czyz scored an unearned run off an infield error.
Ashland roared back for four runs in the third and two more in the fourth inning. The Eagles ran up the score to 9-1 with more runs in the top of eighth and ninth innings.
SIUE rallied for three runs in the ninth inning as Cory Bunner, Jake Smith, and Kyle Amerson recorded RBIs. The Cougars finished 11 hits and 12 runners left on base.
Adam Tallman took the loss for SIUE with his record falling to 4-6. Winning pitcher Todd Schlenkerman improved to 7-1 for Ashland.
