Cougars Move On To GLVC Championship Game

         EAST PEORIA -- The Southern Illinois University Edwardsville softball team has advanced to championship of the Great Lakes Valley Conference tournament after defeating Lewis 2-1 Saturday at EastSide Center.
         The fourth-ranked Cougars, 45-8 overall, will face either the No. 3 seed Flyers Sunday at 1 p.m. The game can be heard live on SIUE's Webradio at http:www.siue.edu/WEBRADIO.
         Lewis is now 38-12 on the season, and has to defeat the Cougars twice to win the championship.
         The winner of tomorrow's game(s) receives an automatic to the NCAA Tourmanent on May 11-14.
         Kaeleigh Rousey went 2-3 in the game with the game-winning RBI in the second.
         The Cougars, the tournament's No. 1 seed, fell behind Lewis 1-0 in the third inning on a solo home run over the right field fence by Amy Yusko.
         GLVC Player of the Year Alicia DeShasier tied the contest at 1-1 in the bottom of the fourth inning with her sixth home run of the season.
         Later that inning after a pair of walks to Libby Lenart and Sabra McCune , Rousey came through with a single that skipped over the third base bag for the game winning RBI.
         Lewis starting pitcher Lisa Gartland was removed for Julie Wingerter after walking the bases loaded with no one out in the fourth. Wingerter put out the fire getting three outs as the Cougars left the bases loaded.
         The Flyers had lead off singles in both the sixth and seventh innings, but failed to score. In the top of the sixth with a runner on first and no one out, first baseman Emily Lenart made a diving catch on a popped up bunt by Mallory Paine as the Cougars got out of the inning.
         McCune improves her record to 26-6 overall, after giving u p one run on six hits and striking out six batters.
         Gartland took the loss as she falls to 7-1 on the year. Gartland gave up both runs on four hits while walking three batters.
         Yusko and Robin Martz each went 2-3 in the game for the Flyers.
