Cougars Use Long Ball to Win GLVC Title

         EAST PEORIA, Ill. -- Home runs by Alicia DeShaiser and Libby Lenart lifted Southern Illinois University Edwardsville to a 2-1 victory over Lewis in the championship game of the 2006 Great Lakes Valley Conference Tournament.
         SIUE, 46-8 and ranked No. 4 in the NFCA/NCAA Division II poll, earned the automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament and is expected to be named the host for the NCAA Great Lakes Regional Championship. The Cougars won their first GLVC softball crown since 2003 and their third overall. Lewis is now 39-13. The field for the NCAA Tournament is expected to be announced Monday. Wayne State and West Virginia Wesleyan won their respective conference tournaments in the Great Lakes Region and earned automatic bids.
         Cougar hurler Sabra McCune lost a perfect game and the shutout with one out in the seventh inning as Lewis' Mallory Payne smacked her ninth home run of the season. McCune, who won all four of SIUE's games in the GLVC Tournament, improved to 27-6.
         DeShasier, named the GLVC's Player of the Year, hit her second home run of the GLVC Tournament and her seventh of the year in the first inning off Julie Wingerter, 14-6. Lenart added her solo shot in the third inning on a 3-2 pitch off Wingerter.
         Lewis threatened in the seventh inning. After Payne's one-out home run, Kelly Dianis singled to right center. Kristy Vanek moved Dianis over to third with a sacrifice bunt. Designated player Shannon Roney then drew a walk, the only one of the game for Lewis. Amy Yusko then lined out to SIUE third baseman Amy Rogers to end the game.
