         FLORENCE, Ala. - Off to a great start, the Southern Illinois University Edwardsville volleyball team swept Albany State and Alabama-Huntsville Friday on the opening day of the North Alabama Tournament.
         The Cougars, 2-0, overpowered Albany State 30-10, 30-10, 30-19 and downed Alabama-Huntsville 30-17, 30-18, 30-23.
         SIUE posted the second-best single-match hitting percentage in school history against Albany State. SIUE hit .479 with 55 kills and 10 errors in 94 attacks. Mallory Clements, a sophomore setter, led SIUE in kills with 10. SIUE spread the wealth in kills with 10 different players recording a kill.
         SIUE's defense held Albany State to an .048 hitting percentage. The Cougars also took advantage of 12 service aces, including six from sophomore outside hitter Emily Rahn.
         It was more of the same against Alabama-Huntsville. SIUE's defense held Alabama-Huntsville to an .040 hitting percentage.
         The offense was not as dominant but still picked up 11 kills from sophomore Kate Hofeldt and 10 from Emily Rahn.
         The service ace count was 13 against Alabam-Huntsville as Rahn led the team with five.
         SIUE's next action continues Saturday at the North Alabama Tournament when it faces Texas-Permian Basin and No. 9-ranked North Alabama.
