No. 10 SIUE Advances to GLVC Semis

INDIANAPOLIS, IND. -- No. 10-ranked Southern Illinois University Edwardsville volleyball extended its winning streak to 12 matches Friday with a five-set victory over Drury in the quarterfinals of the Great Lakes Valley Conference Tournament.
         It was a see-saw match for the Cougars and the Panthers. SIUE won the match 30-18, 23-30, 30-14, 26-30, 15-8. SIUE advanced to play Lewis at 5 p.m. ET/4 p.m. CT in the GLVC Tournament semifinals Saturday. Lewis defeated UM-St. Louis in three games in its quarterfinal match earlier Friday.
         "At this time of the year, it doesn't matter how many games you win in. You just need to win," said SIUE Coach Todd Gober.
         Kelsey Hubert (Freeburg) provided three of the last four kills in game five for the Cougars against Drury. She led all players with 17 kills and six blocks for the match.
         All six SIUE starters finished with double-digit kills as the Cougar offense provided 80 kills. Hubert was followed by 16 kills from Samantha Schulte (Kenosha, Wis.), 15 from Emily Rahn (Waukesha, Wis.) and 10 each from Sydney Winslow (Farmington, Mo.) and Kate Hofeldt (Antioch) SIUE setter Mallory Clements (Mt. Pulaski) produced another triple-double with 11 kills, 10 digs and 53 assists.
         Gober gave credit to his team not to give up after surrendering games two and four. "We kept fighting back and swinging at the ball," he said.
         Drury ended its season with a 15-15 record overall.
         "We played a Drury team that had nothing to lose. And they went for it today and played hard," Gober said.
         The Cougars hit .244 for the match and held Drury to a negative hitting percentage (more attack errors than kills) in games one and three. Courtney Hendrickson and Megan Warhol powered Drury with 16 kills each.
