Cougars 2-0 on Opening Day

         CARROLLTON, GA. - There's nothing like Opening Day.
         With brisk temperatures around the freezing mark, Southern Illinois University Edwardsville softball walked away with a pair of wins to start the 2007 season at the West Georgia Tournament. SIUE, the No. 5-ranked team in the NFCA/NCAA Division II preseason coaches poll, defeated North Alabama 3-1 and Delta State 10-0 in five innings.
         Kaeleigh Rousey, a junior shortstop from Bloomington, muscled up for her first home run of the season in her first at-bat of the season, a two-run blast to put SIUE ahead for good against North Alabama.
         Sabra McCune opened the season with her first win, a five-hitter while striking out 12 and walking no North Alabama hitters.
         The Cougars jumped ahead of Delta State in the first inning. McCune blasted a three-run homer and Jodie Ohlau added a solo home run to highlight a five-run first inning. SIUE matched that with five more runs in the third as the game ended after five innings via the eight-run slaughter rule.
         Kaitlin Colosimo earned a two-hit shutout in her first win of the season.
         SIUE faces three games Saturday as the tournament made a switch in its schedule because of the weather conditions. The Cougars play No. 12 Alabama-Huntsville at 1 p.m., No. 15 Columbus State at 3 p.m. and host West Georgia at 7 p.m.
