ROLLA, MO. -- Luke Vine and James Hertel provided back-to-back shutouts in a doubleheader sweep for Southern Illinois University Edwardsville baseball over Missouri-Rolla.
SIUE vaulted into a tie for first place by Drury, which is in its first season as a program. Both teams are 6-2 in the early-going in the Great Lakes Valley Conference. SIUE is now 10-4 overall.
In game one, Vine tossed a three-hitter in the seven-inning game. He fanned seven and walked two.
SIUE didn't score until the fourth when it took advantage of an error and balk by Missouri-Rolla starter-loser Matt Campbell. The Cougars scored twice in the fourth and fifth innings and added insurance runs in the sixth and seventh.
Hertel pitched a gem, outdueling Missouri-Rolla's Stephen Read. Hertel allowed just one hit, a sixth-inning double by Gerad Fox.
SIUE scored the lone run of the game when Cory Bunner rapped a two-out base hit up the middle to drove home Michael DalPozzo.
The Cougars play its first home games of the season Tuesday when they entertain Quincy in a 1 p.m. doubleheader at Roy Lee Field.
