EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. -- With an explosive offensive game, the Southern Illinois University Edwardsville baseball team defeated Kentucky Wesleyan College 22-11 Sunday.
The 22-run performance marked the most runs scored by a Cougar baseball team in Great Lakes Valley Conference play. The previous best of 21 was set against Lewis on April 7, 2001. It was also the most runs scored by SIUE in a game since its 23-13 win over Northwest Missouri State University on Feb. 25, 2001.
With the win, SIUE increased its record to 17-8 overall and 11-6 in the Great Lakes Conference. It was win No. 899 for SIUE Coach Gary Collins. He will make his first attempt at No. 900 Tuesday at 1 p.m. in a doubleheader at UW-Parkside in Kenosha, Wis.
SIUE's offensive attack started with a seven-run first inning. KWC, now 9-21 overall and 6-9 in the GLVC, came back with five of their own in the second and after the fourth inning SIUE was up 10-7. The Cougars added five in the fifth, one in the sixth, five in the seventh and one in the eight en route to their win.
SIUE was led by Daniel Thomson and Cory Bunner, who both went 4-for-6 and scored three runs each.
Thomson's day included three doubles, one single and two RBIs. Bunner added a triple and two singles along with four RBIs.
Jim Grant was also strong at the plate for SIUE hitting 2-for-3 with a three-run homer in the fourth and a triple in the seventh.
SIUE's Nick Taylor earned the win to put him at 1-0 on the season, and KWC's Michael Ruby earned the loss.
