EVANSVILLE, Ind. - Evansville scored twice in the first 14 minutes of play Wednesday and went on to a 2-1 victory over Southern Illinois University Edwardsville in women's college soccer.
The Purple Aces improved to 9-3-2 and a perfect 8-0 at Black Beauty Field. With the loss, SIUE dropped to 5-7 and has one game remaining on its 2008 schedule. The Cougars travel to Eastern Kentucky on Oct. 24.
SIUE Coach Derek Burton said the Cougars had quality chances in the both halves.
"The last 60 minutes of the game we played with the kind of passion we needed," he said. "Unfortunately, it was just too much to come back from for us."
Amy Million provided the highlight of the day for the Cougars. The Cougar senior from Granite City scored at 72:03 on an assist from Ashley Davidson. SIUE was outshot by the Aces 18-14 but led in overall shots midway through the second half.
Evansville jumped on the Cougars early when Mia Tofano scored her ninth goal of the season at 3:55. Kellee Widener and Nicole Moyen were both credited with assists on the goal. Evansville took a 2-0 lead at 13:44 when Tofano picked up her 10th goal of the season.
Both Evansville goalkeeper Teresa Bagby and SIUE goalkeeper Kaci Backs each finished with three saves.
