SIUE Sweeps Past Skyhawks

         EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. -- Sydney Winslow led all players with 14 kills as Southern Illinois University Edwardsville defeated UT Martin Friday night in college volleyball.
         SIUE, now 9-10 overall, won the three-set match over the Skyhawks 25-19, 26-24, 25-23. UT Martin, a future Ohio Valley Conference opponent, dropped to 7-18 and lost both contests this season to SIUE.
         Winslow led the charge as SIUE hit .330 as a team. Winslow recorded 14 kills on 22 attacks for a .545 hitting percentage. Outside hitter Emily Rahn recorded 12 kills and a .318 hitting percentage. Middle hitter Samantha Schulte ended the match with 10 kills on 15 kills with a .533 hitting percentage.
         SIUE coach Todd Gober said his team's experience paid off tonight.
         "If we could get the ball up (on defense), we could get kills," he said.
         The Cougars outhit UT Martin 55-35 in kills.
         SIUE setter Mallory Clements was able to spread the floor against the Skyhawks. With 40 assists, the senior also added eight kills.
         Taylor Noland powered UT Martin with 11 kills. The Skyhawks hit a strong .237 against the Cougars and recorded nine blocks, including five from Britany Wilburn.
         The Cougars had to come from behind in the third set. Gober used his second timeout with the Cougars down 19-15. SIUE would win the next six points off the serve of Diane Schmidlin to pass over the Skyhawks.
         "I was proud of our team. When we were down, we didn't lose our composure," said Gober.
         SIUE next travels across the Mississippi River to take on Saint Louis University. Match time Wednesday is 7 p.m. in St. Louis.
