SIUE Challenges No. 23 SLU

         ST. LOUIS, Mo. -- In the first-ever meeting between Southern Illinois University Edwardsville and Saint Louis University volleyball, the Billikens took round one.
         SLU, ranked No. 23 in the latest American Volleyball Coaches Association/NCAA Division I poll, recorded its 20th win of the season in a 25-12, 27-25, 25-20 victory over the Cougars. SIUE dropped to 9-11 while the Billikens improved to 20-4.
         "Even though we had faced tough competition we stuck to the game plan," said SIUE Coach Todd Gober. "We started out the first set timid but settled in during the second and third set."
         SIUE recovered from a slow start in first set and sent set two into some extra points. Gober said his team starting executing better as the match progressed. "I could tell after the first set that we were not satisfied with our performance." noted Gober.
         After being down 19-10 in the second set, SIUE rallied to tie the score 23-23 on a block by Samantha Schulte and Mallory Clements.
         SIUE and SLU split the next four points only to have the Billikens collect the next two points on a kill by Sammi McCloud and an attack error by SIUE's Sydney Winslow.
         The Cougars would settle in during set three with 15 kills, a number equal to the first two sets combined.
         "We have gained confidence in our games against top Division I competition." said Gober.
         Winslow led SIUE with 12 kills. The Cougar sophomore hit .240, tops among the Cougar starters. As a team, SIUE hit .135.
         SLU, which kept the Cougars off-balance with 10 service aces, finished with 39 kills to SIUE's 30. McCloud led all players with 13 kills and a game-high .414 hitting percentage. SLU hit .276 for the match.
