Cougars Rout Providence

         CHICAGO, Ill. - Southern Illinois University Edwardsville volleyball turned in its best offensive performance of the season Friday in a three-set rout over Providence at the Chicago State Tournament.
         The Cougars improved to 3-7 for the season with a 25-11, 25-18, 25-22 triumph over the Friars, now 8-10 overall.
         SIUE, ranked No. 248 in the nation in the Rating Percentage Index (RPI) for NCAA Division I volleyball, hit .393 for the match with 45 kills and just 10 attack errors. Providence managed 28 kills and 14 attack errors.
         Emily Rahn led the Cougars with 12 kills. Samantha Schulte posted nine kills and added a season-high six blocks. Sydney Winslow recorded eight kills and five blocks.
         SIUE setter Mallory Clements posted 37 assists. She added two kills on a season-low six attacks as the Cougars effectively used its front line. Clements has been averaging nearly five attacks per set coming into Friday's match.
         The Cougars got off to a stellar start at the Chicago State Tournament with 18 kills in the opening set against Providence. SIUE hit .552 in the set and held the momentum with 15 kills in set two and 12 more in the third set.
         Providence's Jeanette Toney led the Friars with nine kills. The Friars were active in serving with eight aces. SIUE nearly matched Providence with seven service aces of its own, including three from Schulte and two from Diane Schmidlin.
         SIUE continues play at the Chicago State Tournament with a 4 p.m. match Saturday against Quinnipiac and host Chicago State at 7 p.m.
