Cougars Climb to .500 Record

         EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. -- Southern Illinois University Edwardsville volleyball leaped to a .500 record Saturday with its second win in as many days. The Cougars, 11-11, defeated future Ohio Valley Conference opponent Eastern Illinois 25-17, 25-13, 25-20 at the Vadalabene Center.
         It was the fourth win in the last five outing for the Cougars, who are playing an NCAA Division I schedule for the first time in their history. SIUE, which won in straight sets Friday over Chicago State, dominated the Panthers by hitting .295 for the match and collecting more kills 42-28.
         "I was happy to have no surprises," said SIUE coach Todd Gober. "The team kept its focus with all of the distractions."
         With senior day for five players, the Cougars wanted to go out in style.
         Senior setter Mallory Clements led SIUE with three service aces, seven kills and 29 assists. Clements put the finishing touch with a kill on match point.
         "Mallory played outstanding today," added Gober.
         Sydney Winslow led SIUE in kills with nine. The balanced attack from the Cougars had seven kills from Noelle Franke and Samantha Schulte along with six each from Kelsey Hubert and Emily Rahn.
         Alex Zwettler was the standout for EIU with 10 kills. Eastern Illinois was held to a .077 hitting percentage.
         SIUE improved to 5-1 against future OVC opponents. The Cougars have one more match against an OVC team this season when they entertain Eastern Kentucky Tuesday. Match time is 7 p.m.
