EVANSVILLE, Ind. - Evansville won the first Battle of the Es.
In the first meeting between Southern Illinois University Edwardsville and the University of Evansville, the Aces came out on top 89-58 Tuesday night at Roberts Stadium.
Evansville improved to 4-1 as it outrebounded the Cougars 61-31. The Aces jumped out to an 18-4 lead in the opening minutes and didn't look back.
In a crowd of 4,725 peppered with former SIUE players who had played for Evansville coach Marty Simmons, the Battle of the Es wasn't what SIUE had in mind.
"We just struggled offensively and struggled to start," said SIUE Coach Lennox Forrester, who was an assistant coach at Evansville for 13 seasons.
Forrester said the Cougars didn't play a strong enough physical game to match the Aces. He said Evansville's motion offense allowed for a balanced scoring effort.
"You've got to match their physical-ness if you want to win," said Forrester.
SIUE was down 40-28 at halftime and didn't come within single digits in the second half. The Cougars shot 32.8 percent for the game and hit just 2 of 21 shots from the beyond the three-point arc.
Aamir McCleary led SIUE in scoring with 12 points followed by 10 from John Edmison.
Evansville picked up a career-best 17 points from Pieter van Tongeren. Senior Shy Ely posted 15 points and a career-high 14 rebounds. The Aces shot 29 of 65 from the field for 44.6 percent.
SIUE, 2-5, now returns to the Vadalabene Center for a Thursday matchup against Millikin. Game time is 7:30 p.m.
