MURFREESBORO, Tenn. - Desmond Yates scored a game-high 25 points on 11-of-16 shooting as Middle Tennessee State pushed past Southern Illinois University Edwardsville 80-51 Sunday at the Murphy Center.
The Cougars now look to Tuesday night to break their three-game slump. SIUE, 2-7, faces off against Lipscomb, out of Nashville, Tenn., in a 7 p.m. matchup.
The Blue Raiders evened their record to 3-3 with the win, halting its three-game losing streak.
SIUE Coach Lennox Forrester said the Cougars wanted to minimize Yates on the offensive end.
"We have to do a better job of sticking to the game plan," said Forrester.
The Cougars and the Blue Raiders were tied 22-22 late in the first half before the Blue Raiders began their charge. "We were being aggressive and doing a good job," said Forrester of the team's first 15 minutes of play. SIUE aggressively was scoring off the baseline drive.
MTSU then used a 17-2 run to end the first half and a 14-4 run to start the second half, giving the Blue Raiders a solid 53-28 lead within the first five minutes of the second half.
SIUE freshman Mark Yelovich finished as the Cougars' leading scorer with 15 points on 5-of-9 shooting. He was the lone Cougar to score in double figures.
MTSU countered with three players in double figures led by Yates. Montarrio Haddock added 19 points while Demetrius Green collected 12.
