CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. - What a difference a day makes.
That's how Southern Illinois University Edwardsville volleyball coach Todd Gober felt after watching his Cougars defeat UT Martin 21-25, 25-11, 25-21, 25-20 in the final day of the Lady Govs Classic on the campus of Austin Peay.
"The key was that our defense and back row players played well today," said Gober. "Today everybody was aggressive. We had players diving all over the place. And we controlled the tempo into our setter."
SIUE improved to 1-1 for the season while handing UT Martin, 2-1, its first loss.
SIUE setter Mallory Clements needed just two more kills to add to her list of career triple-doubles. While falling short, Clements turned in an outstanding game with eight kills, 43 assists and 10 digs. She was named to the All-Tournament team.
Gober said the Cougar defense, led by libero Diane Schmidlin, made the difference in the match. SIUE recorded 74 digs with 16 from Schmidlin and 11 each from defensive specialist Tiffany Turner and outside hitter Emily Rahn.
SIUE's offense didn't get out a great start in game one as the Skyhawks took advantage of the Cougars' eight attack errors. The Cougars would only commit seven attack errors for the rest of the match against UT Martin, which also is a member of the Ohio Valley Conference. SIUE hit .390 in set two and .436 in set three.
"It was a whole different match for us than yesterday," said Gober. "We were much more relaxed and played a solid game."
Kelsey Hubert led the offense with 14 kills, and Noelle Franke came off the bench to record 12 kills. SIUE outswiped the Skyhawks in kills 59-41.
Gober said the Cougars served well despite their 12 service errors to just five service aces.
"We served aggressively, and they were out of system for a great deal of the match," he noted.
SIUE is now idle until next Friday when it travels to Peoria for the Bradley Tournament. SIUE faces off against Eastern Michigan, Bradley and Wisconsin-Milwaukee in the two-day tourney.
