Cougars Go Five Set with Bradley

         EAST PEORIA, Ill. - Southern Illinois University Edwardsville sophomore Sydney Winslow finished with a career-high 19 kills Friday in a five-set loss at Bradley.
         The volleyball Cougars, 2-2, played their second five-set match of the day. SIUE won the first one over Eastern Michigan but fell two points short against the Braves, now 1-4. Bradley won the match 25-23, 22-25, 25-11, 25-22, 15-13.
         "What a roller coaster," said SIUE Coach Todd Gober.
         Winslow hit .387 for the match and added two blocks.
         "She was the go-to player and the whole gym knew," said Gober. "She was battling double blocks and found ways to get her kills."
         The Braves, who kept defensive pressure on the Cougars with 19 team blocks for the match, grabbed the early lead in a tight set one. Melissa Collins recorded one of her 12 kills to close out the set.
         SIUE came back in set two with another strong set. The Cougars led by five points at 24-19 and needed a kill from Samantha Schulte to put the set away.
         The Cougars struggled in game three with 12 attack errors. Bradley's Amy Reichel led the charge in game three and finished the match with 17 kills.
         SIUE setter Mallory Clements keyed the attack in set four. After posting a kill at 15-13, Clements served five straight points and SIUE grabbed a 19-14 lead. Clements, who would finish with 10 kills and 39 assists, added the final kill of the set, sending the match into a fifth set.
         Bradley led by as much as four points at 13-9. SIUE kept pushing with kills from Winslow and Noelle Franke. The Braves led 14-11 and collected the win on its fourth match point when Collins scored the kill.
         "Our team has been working hard in practice, and it has showed in our play," Gober said.
         SIUE's final match of the tournament is Saturday when it faces Wisconsin-Milwaukee in a 1:30 p.m. match.
