SIUE Defeats Eastern Michigan

         EAST PEORIA, Ill. - Samantha Schulte posted a match-high 17 kills with just one error in leading Southern Illinois University Edwardsville to a five-set victory over Eastern Michigan in its opening match at the Wingate by Wyndham Tournament.
         SIUE defeated the Eagles 25-20, 25-23, 19-25, 19-25, 18-16 to improve its season record to 2-1. Eastern Michigan fell to 1-3.
         The Cougars won the nearly two-hour match with strong serving and defense. Diane Schmidlin recorded a career-high six service aces and 25 digs. The Cougar libero was the leader as SIUE finished with 10 service aces and 111 digs.
         Games one and two went the Cougars' way as SIUE took advantage of 15 attack errors from the Eagles. Eastern Michigan fought back with victories in sets three and four to send the game into a fifth and deciding frame.
         SIUE minimized mistakes in game five with six kills to just three errors. Game five is played to 15 points and must be won by two points. The Cougars went into extra play when the score was tied 16-16. SIUE won the final two points of the contest when setter Mallory Clements, who had 35 assists, connected with her eighth kill of the match. Clements and Hubert then teamed up to successfully block Victoria Randolph attack.
         Eastern Michigan outhit SIUE with 58 kills to the Cougars' 51 as well as a slightly better hitting percentage (.117-.101).
         Schulte was the key element for SIUE's offensive attack. She hit .410 against the Eagles. Fellow middle hitter Kelsey Hubert hit .250 and was second on the team in kills with 11.
         Jennifer Swartz led four Eastern Michigan players with double-digit kills. She hit a team-best .353 with 14 kills.
         Next up for SIUE is host Bradley at 6 p.m. The matches are being held on the campus of Illinois Central College.
