AMES, Iowa - Iowa State opened the icy new year quite hot from the field in a 91-55 victory over Southern Illinois University Edwardsville.
It was the end of an eight-game road swing for the men's basketball Cougars that included wins over Missouri-Kansas City and Southeast Missouri State. SIUE, 4-12, returns to the Vadalabene Center Thursday for a 7:30 p.m. game against Saint Xavier.
Iowa State shot 59.3 from the field and 50 percent from three-point range in the 36-point rout.
"One of our keys was to take away their threes, and we didn't do that," said SIUE Coach Lennox Forrester. Iowa State hit 10 of 20 from beyond the arc.
Aamir McCleary led SIUE with 16 points and eight rebounds. Barry Wellington was the only other Cougar in double figures with 12 points. SIUE shot 40.4 percent, becoming just the third team other than Iowa and South Dakota State to shoot better than 40 percent against the Cyclone defense.
The Cyclones, 10-4, finished with three players in double figures led by 16 from Justin Hamilton, who was 7 of 9 from the field. Bryan Petersen tossed in 13 points and Diante Garrett added 12 and eight assists.
Saturday's game started the same way as SIUE's last contest. McCleary, who scored a game-winning three-pointer against Southeast Missouri State, opened the game with a trey. SIUE opened up an 8-2 lead against Iowa State to start the contest.
"I thought he (McCleary) got us off to a great start. He's getting better all of the time just like the rest of the team," said Forrester.
Iowa State took over the first half by scoring 64 percent from the field, hitting 12 of 16 shots from inside the arc. Petersen led the charge for the Cyclones with 10 points in the first half on a pair of three-pointers and four free throws. Iowa State scored 22 of its 41 points in the first half inside the paint.
