CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. - Southern Illinois University Edwardsville and Austin Peay settled for a 1-1 tie Friday night in women's college soccer.
SIUE Coach Derek Burton said it was a game where the post-game statistics were very telling of how the game went. SIUE held the edge in the first period and the second overtime period while Austin Peay grabbed the edge in the second period and the first overtime period.
"It was a good effort. The girls gave it everything they had," said Burton.
A chilly evening and a slick, wet field made for some interesting soccer.
SIUE scored at 14:46 when Jenny Humphrey delivered a corner kick to the far post where Correen Roark headed it to Brittany Bodziak on the other post. Bodziak was in perfect position to best Austin Peay goalkeeper Mackenzie Ladd.
"It was a great service," Burton said of Humphrey's corner kick. SIUE would have nine corner kicks in the game.
SIUE held a 7-4 shot edge by halftime. Austin Peay tied it up at 82:46 by using a long free kick which ended up hitting the crossbar and looked to be saved by SIUE goalkeeper Clair e Lovercheck. APSU's Michelle Johnson stepped in and pushed it into the goal just off Lovercheck's hands.
The Cougars didn't take a shot in the first overtime period but gained multiple opportunities in the second overtime period. SIUE had four shots, three of which were saved by Ladd.
SIUE next faces Missouri-St. Louis in St. Louis on Tuesday. Game time is 7 p.m.
