MEMPHIS, Tenn. - Memphis scored twice in the final eight minutes Saturday to capture a 2-0 home-field victory over Southern Illinois University Edwardsville.
The men's soccer Cougars, 5-7-2 had opportunities to go ahead, including a shot by Jared Tejada, which hit the post at 78:40. Memphis, 6-5-2, would score goals in the 83rd minute and the 85th minute.
"I thought it was a pretty even game," said SIUE Coach Kevin Kalish. The Cougars collected 10 shots, including eight that were on goal.
SIUE goalkeeper Scott Meyer was peppered with 19 shots from Memphis' offense, gaining 11 saves for the game. Kalish praised Meyer's effort. "Scott was exceptional in goal tonight. I think he's one of the best goalkeepers right now in college soccer at the moment," Kalish said.
Memphis used the restart to record its first goal. Brian Farrell turned his corner kick into an assist as Hugo Mondragon picked up his first goal of the season on a header. Mondragon scored at 82:14.
Thomas Shannon would add an insurance goal on a penalty kick at 84:36.
Kalish said Kevin Bielicki, who led the team with three shots, had another strong game."This is the third straight game that he has been highly active in the offense. He played well," said Kalish.
Michael Goodlet recorded the shutout for Memphis. He finished with seven saves.
Next up for SIUE is a trip up to Western Illinois. The game in Macomb is set for 3 p.m. on Wednesday.
