EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. - Although the shots were virtually the same, Missouri State turned in a 2-0 victory over Southern Illinois University Edwardsville in women's college soccer action at Korte Stadium.

SIUE, 2-9-2, in fact outshot Missouri State 14-13. The Bears improved to 8-5-2.

"Our team played tough against a well-coached and experienced Missouri State team," said SIUE Coach Derek Burton. "I was proud of our performance today."

SIUE goalkeeper Stephanie Jung collected seven saves, including a stop on a penalty kick in the first half. Missouri State split time between goalkeepers Jessica Teahan and Chelsea Voet, who recorded five and four saves, respectively.

"The team's confidence is growing with Stephanie in goal," said Burton.

The Bears opened the scoring at 14:58 as Jessica Smits centered the ball from near midfield to just in front of the box. The ball skidded away from the intended receiver and then landed at the right foot of Samantha Aguilar, who delivered the ball to the top left of the goal.

SIUE penetrated Missouri State's tight defense numerous times with three shots from both Devon Thomas and Kiara Akpore. The Cougars also held a 4-1 advantage on corner kicks.

"We had opportunities, but we were unlucky that we didn't get a couple of goals," said Burton.

Missouri State added an insurance goal at 79:23 when Kelsey Finders scored from eight yards out on a pass from Nia Williams.

Next up for the Cougars is senior day on Friday when SIUE entertains Southeast Missouri in a 7 p.m. contest. Burton also announced a makeup game. SIUE will travel to Murray State on Nov. 1 for a 1 p.m. game to close out the 2009 season.
