EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. - Bobbie Jo Schlick scored in the first overtime period Friday night as Southeast Missouri State defeated Southern Illinois University Edwardsville 1-0 at Korte Stadium.
The loss for the women's soccer Cougars occurred on Senior Day as SIUE celebrated the final home game for Kelley Humphrey and Correen Roark.
The Cougars and the Redhawks, two future Ohio Valley Conference rivals, were dueling back and forth all night. Even the shots were equal going into the overtime period at 11-11.
"We know SEMO is always going to be tough competition," said SIUE Coach Derek Burton.
On the winning goal at 92:20, SEMO's Mabel Velarde forwarded a pass to Schlick near the top of box. Schlick had an open shot and hit the back of the net from 10 yards away. The Redhawks, which did not advance to the OVC Tournament, improved to 8-7-3 in their season finale.
Devon Thomas led the Cougar offense with five shots.
Kristen Starkey posted the shutout for the Redhawks, gathering six saves. Stephanie Jung, of SIUE, recorded five saves in goal.
SIUE, 2-10-2, has one more contest before it closes out the 2009 season. The Cougars travel to Murray State Sunday to take on the Racers in a make-up contest. Game time is 1 p.m. in Murray, Ky.
