VERMILLION, S.D. - After watching a 17-point lead get away two weeks ago, South Dakota made sure that didn't happen again against Southern Illinois University Edwardsville men's basketball.
South Dakota scored 11 three-pointers and hit 26 of 32 from the free throw line in a 107-73 victory over SIUE. The Coyotes evened the season series as six players finished in double figures.
SIUE, now 9-17, picked up a game-high 19 points from Aamir McCleary. The junior guard shot 6 of 13 from the field and connected on three three-pointers.
The Coyotes went up 50-29 at halftime and did not let up when the opening whistle started the second half.
USD's Mitch Begeman came off the bench for five three-pointers and a team-leading 19 points. He was followed by 16 points from Tyler Cain, 15 from Louie Krogman, 14 from Roman Gentry, 13 from Jesse Becker, 11 from Steve Smith and 10 from Rane Mergen.
SIUE looked comfortable from the free throw line at the DakotaDome, converting 18 of 21 from the charity stripe. SIUE, however, did not appear as confident from the field, hitting just 37.7 percent of its field goals and 20 percent from three-point range.
Barry Wellington finished with 15 points and seven rebounds for the Cougars. Aaron Garriott added 10 off the bench.
The Cougars hope to get back on track Tuesday against Oakland City. The rescheduled game is set for 7 p.m. start at the Vadalabene Center.
