KISSIMMEE, Fla. -- Southern Illinois University softball picked up its 15th win of the season Tuesday at the Rebel Spring Games with wins over Bryant and Pennsylvania.
SIUE, 15-5, defeated Bryant 6-2 in nine innings and topped Pennsylvania 1-0.
SIUE coach Sandy Montgomery said the Cougars found a way to get the victories today at Osceola Sports Complex.
"Our pitching kept us in ball games today," said Montgomery. SIUE's bats were quiet until the late innings in both games. The Cougars scored five in the ninth against Bryant and one in the bottom of the seventh for the win against Penn.
In game one, SIUE and Bryant went into extra innings deadlocked 0-0. With the international tiebreaker set up in the eighth, both teams started to churn out the offense.
SIUE scored in the eighth when Kasey Schlafke singled home Chaleen Rumpf, who had been placed on second to start the inning.
Bryant, 1-13 and also in the same reclassification class to NCAA Division I status as SIUE, tied it up in the eighth on an infield out by Lauren McCart, scoring Stephanie Mirando.
The Cougars rallied in the ninth for five runs. Once again, Schlafke picked up the big hit, a two-run single.
Kaitlin Colosimo picked up the win to improve her season record to 6-3. She struck out 11 and gave up five hits.
In game two, SIUE pitcher Erika Taylor and Penn hurler Emily Denstedt dueled for seven innings. Taylor picked up her second shutout of the season by scattering four hits and striking out 11 batters.
Denstedt didn't go the distance for the Quakers, 3-6. She was pulled in favor of Jesse Lupardus after SIUE's Lindsey Barron led off the seventh with a pinch-hit single.
After Barron stole second, Rumpf drew a walk. Courtney Mall then loaded the bases by hustling to first on a bunt. Lauren Zembruski earned the game-winning hit with a shot to left field over the head of left-fielder Sarah Patrick. As Barron crossed the plate, the Cougars collected the win.
SIUE next plays Youngstown State at 8 a.m. and Maine at 10 a.m. Wednesday.
