KISSIMMEE, Fla. -- Southern Illinois University Edwardsville concluded its week in Florida with two more victories against Wagner and Florida A&M.
Finishing 8-0 for the Rebel Spring Games, the softball Cougars edged Wagner 8-7 and then dropped Florida A&M 8-0 in five innings.
That brings SIUE's record to 21-5 as it opens its home schedule Wednesday. The Cougars take on Drake, of the Missouri Valley Conference (MVC), in a doubleheader with the first pitch set for 1 p.m. SIUE then faces Wichita State, also from the MVC, at home Thursday for a 2 p.m. doubleheader.
On Saturday, SIUE took a 4-0 lead in the first inning on two-RBI singles by Lindsay Longfellow and Kay Hagelberg.
The lead would vanish with Wagner taking a 5-4 lead in the third inning. Amanda Garcia put Wagner ahead on a sacrifice fly.
SIUE tied it up 5-5 in the fourth and then took the lead for good in the fifth on a two-run single by Chaleen Rumpf.
Erika Taylor picked up the victory, her 11th of the season. She struck out seven and walked one. Five of the seven runs she allowed were unearned.
SIUE made quick work for Florida A&M with a five-inning shutout by Kaitlin Colosimo. She improved to 9-3 with a four-hitter.
The Cougars got all they needed offensively in the four-run first inning. Nicole Beecher's bunt single drove in Courtney Mall to start the scoring.
Whitney Davis also joined the ranks of Cougar home run hitters Saturday, hitting her first collegiate blast. The freshman's home run was a two-run shot in the third-inning.
