EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. -- SIUE softball earned its first home doubleheader sweep of the Division I era Thursday with a pair of wins over Wichita State.
Southern Illinois University Edwardsville, ranked 28th in the Ultimate College Softball national poll, improved to 24-6 with a 2-1 victory in nine innings and an 11-3 rout in five innings over the visiting Shockers. Wichita State is now 10-16 overall.
Chaleen Rumpf collected the game-winning hit in the first game. She singled home Whitney Davis in the bottom of the ninth.
"It was a nail biter, but we got it done," said SIUE Coach Sandy Montgomery.
Both teams finished with seven hits as SIUE pitcher Kaitlin Colosimo and Wichita State hurler Kasha Kolb turned game one into a duel.
SIUE jumped on the scoreboard in the first inning as Lauren Zembruski doubled to the gap in left-center field to drive home Courtney Mall, who led off the game with her 100th career walk.
Lauren Coleman tied the game up for the Shockers in the fourth when she singled home Breanna Brown.
Both teams stranded eight and had numerous chances, but Wichita State had one run taken off the scoreboard in the eighth when Kiersten Dixon cross the plate after a fly ball by Jamie Hull. After the play, SIUE appealed and Dixon was called out for leaving third base early on the potential sacrifice fly.
In the ninth, Davis drew a one out walk. Amanda Pucel advanced Davis to second on a single up the middle. One out later, Rumpf's solid hit to left gave Davis enough time to round third and score the winning run.
Colosimo earned the win, her 11th of the season. She now holds career marks of 83 wins and 658 strikeouts after Thursday's play. She needs one of each to tie and two of each to break the SIUE career records held by Sandy Montgomery.
After extra innings in game one, SIUE turned up the offense in the nightcap.
SIUE scored twice in both the first and second innings and blew the game wide open with a four-run third inning.
Mall finished with two hits and three RBIs. Rumpf added a pair of doubles and an RBI. Zembruski was 3 for 4 with two RBIs to improve her team-leading total to 30 RBIs in 30 games.
Zembruski provided her second walkoff hit in as many days in the bottom of the fifth. Her double hit fence in center field, sending Mall home to score and complete the three-run fifth. The game was called on the eight-run rule.
SIUE hard-hitting bats ended up with nine hits in game two. The Cougars also were able to take advantage of Wichita State's seven errors.
Katie Watkinson earned her second victory of the season in relief of starter Erika Taylor. Taylor would go 1 1/3 innings. She walked three and endured through numerous illegal pitches called on the sophomore right-hander.
Watkinson threw the final 3 2/3 innings and allowed four hits.
"I give her a lot of credit," said Montgomery of Watkinson. "When she has been called upon, she has come through."
