EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. -- Lindsay Longfellow capped a Southern Illinois University Edwardsville comeback Tuesday as the Cougars edged the UIC Flames 10-9 in eight innings.
Longfellow singled home Lauren Zembruski in the bottom of the eighth and was but one of the many heroes on the day for SIUE.
"We had a lot of kids step up and play today," said SIUE coach Sandy Montgomery.
SIUE, 27-6, extended its winning streak to five games with the win after learning it has votes in two national top 25 polls this week. UIC, riding a four-game winning streak heading into the contest, dropped to 8-18. Game two of the scheduled doubleheader was cancelled due to heavy rains at Cougar Field.
The Cougars led early when freshman Whitney Davis singled home the first two runs of the game in the first inning. Davis would finish with three hits and four RBIs. UIC was so conscious of Davis' play that she was intentionally walked in the sixth and the eighth innings.
UIC rallied for six runs in the second inning. Five of the runs were unearned off SIUE starter Kaitlin Colosimo, who was making her first attempt to break the career wins record. Colosimo would go without a decision, yielding to Erika Taylor with the bases loaded and no one out in the sixth inning.
"Colosimo didn't have her best stuff today, but Erika Taylor did a good job stepping in to get the win," said Montgomery.
Taylor got out of the bases-loaded jam in the sixth and threw two more scoreless innings for her 13th victory of the season. The Cougar sophomore fanned three.
UIC made the lead 7-2 with a solo home run in the third when Melissa Marinacci homered to right field. It was the first home run allowed this season by Colosimo in 118-plus innings of work.
SIUE chipped away at the lead with one run in each of the third, fourth and fifth innings. UIC fought back with two in the top of the sixth with RBI singles from Stephanie Chavez and Brooke Frydendall, taking a 9-5 lead.
The Cougars countered with the bat of Zembruski, who muscled a three-run home run in the bottom of the sixth. It was her sixth homer of the season and extended her team-leading RBI total to 34.
Chaleen Rumpf backed that up one inning later with an opposite-field home run to right field, dramatically tieing the score at 9-9.
After Taylor shut down the Flames in the eighth, Zembruski opened the bottom half of the inning with a hard-hit ball to right field. It was her fourth hit of the day as SIUE outhit the Flames 15-13.
Nicole Beecher advanced Zembruski over to second on a sacrifice bunt. UIC pitcher Whitney Orellana, not wanting Davis to defeat the Flames, walked her intentionally but threw ball four wild, allowing Zembruski to advance to third.
With the rain coming down, Longfellow produced the game-winning hit to left field over the head of Ashley Hewett who was playing in for a play at the plate.
"It was a great comeback win today," added Montgomery.
SIUE now is idle until April 2 when it travels to Springfield, Mo., for a single game against the Bears of Missouri State.
