CARBONDALE, Ill. - Wisconsin scored twice in the top of the ninth and edged Southern Illinois University Edwardsville 8-7 at Charlotte West Stadium.
SIUE, 13-5, battled with the Big Ten foes for nine innings only to take its first loss in the Coach B Softball Classic. Wisconsin improved to 7-14. It was the only game of the day for the Cougars as its second contest scheduled against Western Illinois was cancelled due to weather concerns.
Ashley Hanewich provided the eventual game-winning hit in the ninth with a two-run double for the Badgers. SIUE answered with one run in the bottom of the ninth when Chaleen Rumpf singled home Lindsey Barron for her third RBI of the day.
The Cougars stranded 15 runners on base and outhit the Badgers 10-8.
"We left a ton a runners on base. We couldn't come through in the end," said SIUE Coach Sandy Montgomery.
Erika Taylor started for the Cougars but was called for six illegal pitches to start the game. Kaitlin Colosimo replaced Taylor in the first inning after Montgomery was ejected from the game.
Wisconsin scored twice in the first inning but quickly found itself behind 4-2 when SIUE rallied in the second inning. The Cougars picked up RBIs from Kay Hagelberg, Rumpf and Courtney Mall. Rumpf also scored in the inning from third off an error by Wisconsin catcher Theresa Boruta, who was trying to throw out Mall.
After Wisconsin came back for one run in the fourth and two in the fifth to take a 5-4 lead, SIUE tied it up again in the bottom of the fifth when Rumpf singled home Lindsay Longfellow, who led off the inning with a double to left center.
"I thought the kids fought hard to come back," said Montgomery.
The international tiebreaker rule in the eighth inning added to the offense. Both Wisconsin and SIUE scored once in the eighth before Wisconsin's two-run effort in the ninth took control.
