Three-Run Sixth Drops Cougars

         MILLINGTON, TENN. -- The Memphis Tigers scored three times in the sixth inning Friday night and held on to defeat Southern Illinois University Edwardsville 6-3 in college baseball action at USA Stadium.
         SIUE, 6-20, led 3-2 before the three-run inning.
         The Cougars scored an unearned run in the top of the first to go up 1-0. Mitch Matecki singled to lead off the game then scored on a miscue by Tiger right fielder Chris Newsom.
         Memphis, 13-19, tied the game in the bottom of the inning, thanks to an error by Josh Street. It was the first of four errors committed by the Cougars.
         SIUE took a 3-1 lead with a pair of runs in the fourth. Michael Hopkins, Mike Hurt and Zach Hawkins teamed up for three straight hits to start the inning. Hawkins drove in a run with his hit. Chase Thrasher grounded out, but scored Mike Hurt on the play to put the Cougars up by two.
         Memphis starter Brennon Martin allowed nothing more from the Cougars. Hawkins' hit was the last he gave up. He retired the final 11 hitters he faced before leaving prior to the eighth. He earned the win allowing three runs on seven hits.
         Dustin Quattrocchi suffered the loss. He tossed 5 2/3 innings, allowing five runs on seven hits. Quattrocchi falls to 1-3 with the loss.
         Street finished with a pair of hits to extend his team-leading hitting streak to 18 games. Matecki also finished 2-4 for SIUE.
         The two schools play game two of the three-game series Saturday afternoon in Millington. First pitch is set for 2 p.m.
