Cougars Blank UMSL 3-0

         EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. -- Four pitchers combined for a shutout Wednesday as Southern Illinois University Edwardsville blanked Missouri-St. Louis 3-0 at SimmonsCooper Complex.
         SIUE baseball improved its season record to 8-21 with the victory over its former Great Lakes Valley Conference rival. The Tritons fell to 11-26.
         "Any time you can shut someone out playing with metal bats, it's a good day," said SIUE coach Gary Collins.
         Mitchell Fairley went a season-best seven innings and evened his record at 2-2. The sophomore left-hander from Quincy struck out six and gave up four hits.
         Collins spread the wealth to the bullpen, using Josh Hoguet, Blaise Haxel and Dustin Quattrocchi to finish off UMSL. Quattrocchi earned his first career save by getting the final out of the game.
         SIUE scored the only run it really needed in the first inning. Mitch Matecki led off with a double down the right field line off UMSL starter-loser Brandon Fear, 0-4. After Michael Hurt reached on an error by Fear, Dustin Brooks recorded the sacrifice fly to left field, scoring Matecki.
         Chilos Norris III gave SIUE a 2-0 lead when he led off the second inning with a single, stole second and scored on a single up the middle by Hurt.
         SIUE scored once more in the fifth, this time without a base hit. Josh Street led off the inning by being hit by a 3-2 pitch. After stealing second, he moved to third on a balk by Fear. Michael Hopkins then grounded out to UMSL's shortstop. Street scored on the out.
         The Cougars now head back to the road for a single game at Butler. The Cougars play Butler in a 2:30 p.m. game in Indianapolis. SIUE continues the week with a three-game series -- Friday through Sunday -- at Southeast Missouri State, a future Ohio Valley Conference opponent.
