Cougars Swept at SEMO

         CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. - Southeast Missouri State swept a Saturday doubleheader, defeating Southern Illinois University Edwardsville baseball 9-2 and 9-4.
         The two teams are scheduled to play one more game in the series Sunday. Joe Pott will call the play-by-play on WSIE FM 88.7 beginning at 1 p.m. live from Capaha Field.
         The Cougars couldn't muster the necessary offense to defeat the Redhawks. SIUE stranded 10 runners in game one and managed nine hits overall.
         Mike Hurt's third-inning solo homer was the team's offensive highlight in the opener.
         SEMO, 22-14, took the lead early off SIUE starter Spencer Patton, who was lifted after three innings. The Redhawks scored twice in the first inning with an RBI double from Jim Klocke and an RBI single from Matt Wagner.
         Todd Stahlendorf went six innings for the win. He improved to 2-1 and benefited from SEMO's 12 hits.
         In game two, SEMO score a come-from-behind victory with three runs in the fifth and three more in the sixth. Ryan Poole earned the victory in a relief role for the Redhawks. He did not allow a run in 2 1/3 innings of work.
         Mitch Matecki and Zach Hawkins each finished with three hits for the Cougars, now 9-25 overall. Josh Street collected two of SIUE's four RBIs.
         SEMO launched a pair of home runs in the game. Matt Wagner hit a two-run homer in the fifth, which put SEMO ahead for good. Louis Haseltine added a solo blast for back-to-back homers.
