EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. -- Kaitlin Colosimo and Erika Taylor tossed back-to-back shutouts Tuesday as Southern Illinois University Edwardsville swept a doubleheader from Central Arkansas.
SIUE, 38-10, closes out its first Division I softball campaign Wednesday with a 5 p.m. doubleheader against Saint Louis University.
The Cougars won game one 1-0 and took the nightcap 3-0. UCA fell to 23-30 overall.
Colosimo and Taylor both were sharp in their outings. It was the Cougars' 13th and 14th shutouts of the season.
"They've complemented each other all year. They're both throwing well," said SIUE coach Sandy Montgomery.
In game one, Colosimo fanned six batters en route to her 18th victory of the season. After allowing three hits in the first two innings, Colosimo settled in and retired the final 16 Central Arkansas batters.
Colosimo needed to throw well because the Cougars didn't get much done offensively, recording two hits off Central Arkansas starter Holli Hill.
Both of those hits came in the second inning. Lindsay Longfellow opened the inning with a walk. Whitney Davis followed with a bunt single. Amanda Pucel then hit a drive deep to left field that went in and out of the outstretched glove of UCA left fielder Kasey Britt only to pop out and hit the fence for a hit. Davis, trying not to possibly get doubled off at first was passed by Pucel, who was called out. Davis was then forced out at second, leaving Longfellow on third base with two outs.
Kay Hagelberg hit an 0-1 pitch deep in the hole to UCA shortstop Courtney Brock, who mishandled the ball and didn't get it to first in time. The error resulted in Longfellow scoring and the Cougars eventually taking the 1-0 victory.
In the nightcap, Taylor struck out nine and gave up four hits. UCA's biggest threat came in the sixth when the first two hitters singled only to have the next three batters go down in order. Taylor improved to 16-6 for the season.
SIUE's firepower showed through as both Nicole Beecher and Lindsay Longfellow homered for the Cougars off UCA's Kelly Martino. Beecher hit her second homer of the season, a solo shot in the second inning. Longfellow added a two-run home run, her first of 2009, in the fourth inning.
"We hit better in the second game, which I was pleased with," noted Montgomery.
