CLARKSVILLE, Tenn. - Austin Peay took the first game of a three-game series Friday night with a 7-5 victory over Southern Illinois University Edwardsville.
The baseball Cougars play Austin Peay again Saturday with a 1 p.m. start time. The two teams also face off Sunday for a 1 p.m. game.
SIUE, 5-16, hung tough with the Governors but couldn't hold off Austin Peay, 11-17, in the late innings.
The Cougars scored first when Mitch Matecki opened the game with a double to right center. After Michael Hurt advanced Matecki over to third with an infield out, Dustin Brooks grabbed the game's first RBI with a first-pitch single to right field.
SIUE went up 2-0 in the second when Zach Hawkins singled home Michael Hopkins, who opened the inning with a double.
Austin Peay would take its first lead in the bottom of the second as Jon Clinard singled home a pair of runs. Leadoff hitter Michael Blanchard put the Governors up 3-2 on a sacrifice fly.
Hopkins would tie up the score 3-3 in the fourth with his first home run of the season, a blast to left center field.
After the two teams traded runs in the bottom of the sixth for Austin Peay and the top of the seventh for the Cougars, the Governors took the lead for good in the bottom of the seventh when Greg Bachman scored on a two-out single by Clinard.
Austin Peay scored two more in the eight to go up 7-4 when catcher and cleanup hitter Trey Lucas connected on a two-run homer.
The Cougars made one last push in the ninth as Hurt singled home Matecki for the second time in the game. SIUE would leave runners at the corners as APU's Daniel Tenholder got Hopkins to ground out for his fifth save of the season.
Ricky Marshall earned the victory in relief of starter Stephen Huff, who went 6 1/3 innings. Brian Lorenz took the loss for the Cougars after giving up four runs in relief of starter Mitchell Fairley.
