SIUE Overwhelms SLU 14-1

         EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. - Home sweet home.
         Southern Illinois University Edwardsville baseball banged out 16 hits Tuesday as the Cougars overwhelmed Saint Louis University 14-1. It was SIUE's first home game of the season at SimmonsCooper Complex after playing its first 23 Division I games on the road.
         While the bats were active for the Cougars, the SIUE pitching was as hot as the hitting. Starter Spencer Patton, 2-3, collected 10 strikeouts over six innings. Reliever Blaise Haxel added five strikeouts, and Luke Vine added two more in the top of the ninth.
         The Billikens got off to a slow start when starter Zach Outman walked Mitch Matecki, Chilos Norris III and Josh Street to open the game. Michael Hopkins doubled home all three runners with a double to center field.
         SLU yielded 10 walks overall against the Cougars.
         SIUE would score runs in each of the first six innings, including a five-run fifth inning. The Cougars would picked up two hits each from Street, Hopkins, Dustin Brooks and Brett Keeler as well as three each from Mike Hurt and Zach Hawkins.
         The Cougars improved to 6-18 overall. The Billikens dropped to 17-14. The same two teams play at Saint Louis at 6 p.m. Wednesday. Sophomore left-hander Mitchell Fairley is expected to get the start for SIUE.
