Evansville Nips Cougars in Ninth

         EVANSVILLE, IND. -- The Evansville Purple Aces scored three unanswered runs, including the game-winner in the bottom of the ninth inning, to defeat the Southern Illinois University Edwardsville Cougars 3-2 in the first of a four-game series.
         SIUE baseball drops to 10-30. Evansville is now 22-22 with the win.
         Following a lead off walk and a sacrifice bunt, Aces' second baseman Trent Copeland blooped a single into right field for the game winner in the ninth inning.
         The Cougars scored a pair of runs in the fourth to go up 2-0. Mike Hurt led off the inning with an infield hit and advanced to second on a hit by Josh Street. Zach Hawkins laid down a bunt and reached on a wild throw, which allowed Hurt to score. Street would score later in the inning thanks to a botched pick off play.
         SIUE managed just five hits all night off Evansville starter John Foley, who went the distance for his sixth win of the season. Street finished 2-4 with the run. Evansville got on the board in the sixth with a run off Cougars' reliever Josh Hoguet. Hoguet came on to start the fifth. SIUE starter Luke Vine could not continue after straining an oblique muscle.
         The Aces would tie the game with a run in the eighth.
         Hoguet suffered the loss despite a strong outing. He allowed three runs on four hits, but struck out eight. He drops to 1-6.
         The two schools are scheduled to play a doubleheader tomorrow beginning at 3 p.m.
