EVANSVILLE, IND.-Evansville junior right-hander Keegan Dennis no-hit the Southern Illinois University Edwardsville Cougars Saturday night in game two of a double-header. The Aces swept the twin bill from the Cougars at Braun Stadium with a 9-0 win. They won the opener 7-6 in eight innings.
SIUE dropped to 10-32 with the sweep. Evansville improved to 24-22.
Dennis struck out 11 hitters and allowed just two base runners. Michael Hopkins was hit by a pitch in the second and Mitch Matecki walked in the third for the only SIUE base runners.
The Aces jumped all over SIUE starter Dustin Quatrrocchi in the nightcap, touching up the lefty for eight runs on 12 hits over the first five innings. Quattrocchi drops to 1-5 with the loss.
The first game of the doubleheader played out similar to the series' first game on Friday night, a back-and-forth game won by the Aces in walk-off fashion. Evansville got a run in the bottom of the eighth to defeat SIUE 7-6.
Aces' winning pitcher Tom Heithoff, who started the game as the first baseman, bounced a base hit over a drawn infield to win it for Evansville.
Reliever Scott Spinelle suffered the loss to drop to 0-1. Spinelle tossed 2 1/3 innings, allowing an unearned run on two hits.
SIUE scored three times in the sixth to take a 6-5 lead. Dustin Brooks drove in a run in the inning, and Ryan Wiggs added a two-run hit to cap the scoring. Evansville tied the game in the bottom of the sixth inning and it stayed that way until the eighth.
Hopkins led the way offensively for SIUE. Hopkins was 3-3 with a pair of doubles, a single and two RBIs. Wiggs was 1-4 with the two RBIs.
The two teams will conclude the series with a single game Sunday in Evansville. First pitch is set for 1 pm.
