Hoguet Saves Cougars Twice

         MOREHEAD, KY. - Southern Illinois University Edwardsville swept a doubleheader from Morehead State University Saturday at Allen Field. SIUE won the opener 8-5, then scored a come-from-behind 10-9 victory in the nightcap. SIUE improved to 13-32. Morehead State dropped to 16-28.
         SIUE used a five-run seventh to win a back-and-forth second game. Dustin Brooks picked up an RBI hit in the inning, Mike Hurt drove in two with a single, and Zach Hawkins drove in a run with a sacrifice fly.
         Morehead State scored five runs in the bottom of the sixth to go up 8-5. The Eagles hit three homers in the sixth inning. That followed a two-home run inning by the Cougars in the top of the sixth that had SIUE up 5-3.
         Mike Hurt finished 2-4 with four RBIs to lead the Cougars in the second game.
         The two teams combined for 11 homers in the two games.
         Mitchell Fairley earned the win, allowing eight runs over six innings of work. Josh Hoguet earned his second save in as many tries, allowing a run in the seventh.
         SIUE trailed only briefly in game one and held on for the win. Brett Keeler homered with one out in the second to put the Cougars up 1-0. Morehead went up 2-1 with single runs in the third and fourth, before the Cougars took over for good. SIUE scored three times in the fifth to take the lead for good. Connor Haxel tripled to drive in a pair of runs, before Josh Street doubled to drive in Haxel and SIUE led 4-2. Dustin Brooks hit a one-out solo home run in the sixth to put SIUE on top 5-2.
         It was 5-3 SIUE in the seventh when Josh Street hit his team-leading 11th home run of the year to stretch the lead to 6-3. Street finished the game 4-4 with the homer, two singles, a double and a walk.
         Keeler finished the game 2-4 with a pair of RBIs.
         The Cougars added two more in the top of the ninth to go up 8-3. Morehead State added a ninth inning home run to cut into the lead. They left the bases loaded when the game ended. Hoguet faced the final two batters to earn his first save of the year.
         Spencer Patton started and tossed six innings for the win. He allowed three runs and struck out nine to improve to 4-5.
         The Cougars and Eagles will finish the series with a 12 p.m. CT start Sunday afternoon at Allen Field.
